News for the 2025/2026 World Cup winter season
FIS Ski World Cup 2025/26 – Everything you need to know about the 60th anniversary season
The 2025/26 season of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup marks a very special anniversary: for the 60th time, the world’s best skiers will compete against each other. From October 2025 to March 2026, they will compete in 75 individual races (38 men’s, 37 women’s) for crystal globes, FIS points and prestige – with the highlight being the 25th Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina in 2026.
The start in Sölden in the Ötztal valley and a spectacular finale in Lillehammer
Traditionally, the World Cup starts with the giant slaloms in Sölden (25–26 October). It then continues in the USA, where Copper Mountain returns to the race calendar after a break of more than 20 years. The European classics follow in December with stops in Val Gardena, Val d’Isère, Adelboden, Wengen, Kitzbühel and Schladming. Tarvisio (Italy) celebrates a special debut in January – the venue for the 2025 Junior World Championships.
After an Olympic break from 6 to 22 February (5 men’s races in Bormio, 5 women’s races in Cortina d’Ampezzo), the action continues with speed races in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The grand World Cup finale will take place from 19 to 25 March in Lillehammer (Norway) – on the legendary slopes of the 1994 Games.
Men: Can anyone stop Marco Odermatt?
Marco Odermatt will continue to set the standard in 2025/26. The Swiss athlete recently dominated the downhill, super-G and giant slalom rankings and is now chasing his fifth consecutive overall World Cup title – a record that would place him directly behind Marcel Hirscher (8 titles).
His biggest challengers are Henrik Kristoffersen (slalom globe winner and overall runner-up), Loïc Meillard, who has secured podium finishes in both technical disciplines, and Franjo von Allmen, the reigning downhill world champion. Vincent Kriechmayr and Jack Crawford also want to get involved in the speed events.
Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who made history by securing a podium finish for Brazil, will be competing for the overall World Cup title for the first time. Former World Cup dominator Marcel Hirscher is working hard on his comeback after injury – this time under the Dutch flag.
Women: Shiffrin, Gut-Behrami and Vonn in focus
Unfortunately, Federica Brignone will miss the start of the season due to injury after winning the overall World Cup in 2025. Her absence opens up opportunities for Mikaela Shiffrin and Lara Gut-Behrami. Shiffrin, who holds the absolute record with 101 World Cup victories, is aiming for her sixth overall World Cup and ninth slalom globe.
Gut-Behrami wants to crown her career with a third overall victory, while Lindsey Vonn is aiming for the Olympics once again after her successful comeback at the age of 40.
In the younger generation, Zrinka Ljutic (Croatia) is bringing a breath of fresh air as the overall slalom winner, as are Camille Rast (Switzerland), Alice Robinson (New Zealand) and Lara Colturi (Albania), who has already reached World Cup podiums as a teenager.
Conclusion
The 2025/26 Ski World Cup season promises pure excitement – from the chase for Odermatt to Vonn’s comeback. With new venues, Olympic flair and legendary classics, it is an absolute must for all fans of alpine skiing.
