The right storage for skis, snowboards and equipment over the summer

How can I ensure that my skis and ski boots, board and boots and winter sports clothing survive the summer?

Just as you store your summer clothing and shoes neatly and cleanly before the onset of winter, it is advisable to store your winter sports equipment clean and dry.

So that you can take your ski and snowboard equipment back to the slopes in good condition at the start of the new winter season, it is important to treat the equipment correctly. We’ll give you a few useful tips and tricks for the right storage for skis, snowboards and equipment over the summer 🎿👍🏻🏂

Skis, snowboard, cross-country or touring skis

First clean your skis, snowboard, cross-country or touring skis thoroughly with water and allow them to dry properly. It is advisable to let the skis or board dry with the underside facing upwards. It is then advisable to take them to a specialist to have the edges professionally sanded so that no unwanted rust can form. Have any minor or major damage to the base repaired and waxed properly so that it doesn’t dry out over the summer.

You can also easily clean the bindings with a little water. Again, allow them to dry thoroughly before storing them. Before you hit the slopes for the first time, we recommend that you have your bindings checked and adjusted in a sports shop or ski rental shop to ensure that they are set and released correctly. A lot can change in a year and the correct adjustment of the binding contributes to your safety.

It is best to store your ski and snowboard equipment in a dark, dry, cool place with a constant temperature. Do not store them in a ski or snowboard bag, as moisture can build up there. Skis are best stored individually and upright. If you are handy, you can build a rack in which you can hang the skis individually. As soon as the ski resorts reopen in November or December, you and your equipment will be ready for the slopes.

Extras for touring skis

Touring skis can be treated like piste skis. However, skins and avalanche transceiver equipment are also part of touring skis. The skins of touring skis must be kept dry and can be stored with a separating net. Please ensure that they are stored in a cool place, as high temperatures damage the adhesive. You should always remove the batteries from your avalanche transceiver to prevent them from leaking and damaging the expensive device. Before the new season, always check whether the avalanche transceiver software is up to date and whether maintenance is required.

Ski and snowboard boots

Firstly, remove the inner boot. Now start by removing the dirt from the outside of the ski boots. Then clean the inside of the boots thoroughly. To prevent mould in the boots, you can remove the insole and allow everything to dry thoroughly. Under no circumstances should you dry them on a radiator, as they can become deformed. If you wish, you can also use a disinfectant spray. Only when everything is completely dry do you put the insole into the inner boot and then back into the shell of the boot.

Do your ski boots stink? That’s not nice. 😟 But don’t worry, we have the solution. Use chalk, tea bags (preferably with green tea) or baking powder. They absorb moisture and provide a fresh or neutral scent. You can use this trick not only on your ski and snowboard boots, but also on all your other shoes.

Now just close the buckles to keep the shoe in shape and store the shoes in a dry place.

Ski accessories

Helmets, ski goggles, ski poles and gloves can now also be stowed away again. But you should clean them well first.

You can treat the helmet with a disinfectant spray, for example. If possible, remove the inner lining of the helmet and wash it according to the washing instructions.

Ski goggles should only be cleaned with specially designed microfibre cloths! Please make sure that you touch the inside as little as possible so that the anti-fog coating does not disappear.

Your gloves should be completely dry before you stow them away. If you have leather gloves, for example, you can treat them with a leather care set.

Ski clothing

Of course you wash your ski clothing, but please do not use fabric softener! Use normal liquid detergent and not powder, as this can clog the membranes.

Ski and snowboard trousers and jackets should be impregnated again against moisture and dirt. You can do this as follows: either use a special textile detergent with waterproofing agent straight away or spray the jacket and trousers with waterproofing spray after washing. Tip: Your local sports shop will be happy to advise you on choosing the right care product. Afterwards, you can hang the clothes up in the wardrobe or store them in a large bag. Jackets with down or Primaloft are best hung up. Please do not use a storage system with compression, which reduces the volume. This can damage the down or the lining in the jackets.

While your winter sports equipment is in hibernation, you can enjoy the spring and summer and dream of the next snowy winter with new skiing, snowboarding or cross-country skiing adventures.
