New ski lifts and cable cars in Austria’s ski resorts

Numerous ski resorts in Austria such as Zell am See, Kitzski, Zillertal Arena, Schlick 2000, Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis are building new ski lifts and cable cars that will open in the winter season 2023/2024. SNOWELL lists for you which new lifts you can enjoy in ski resorts in the new ski season.

Zell am See – Schmittenhöhe

Sonnkogelbahn – 6-seater chairlift

For 40 years, guests on the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See have been transported to the ski area by a 3-seater chairlift. The name of the Sonnkogelbahn has remained the same, but nothing else reminds of the old ski lift. The valley station and the Sonnkogel restaurant are also being completely renovated. The old, not-so-comfortable lift, will be replaced by a modern chairlift with a 6-seater chair with seat heating, wind protection and automatic closing bars in winter and converted into an 8-seater chair with comfortable access for hikers and families in summer. As the new lift will also be much faster, skiers and snowboarders will be able to spend even more time on the slopes.

Kitzbühel / Kirchberg – Kitzski

No less than 2 lifts will be renewed in the coming winter season in the Kitzski ski area in Kitzbühel / Kirchberg.

Gauxjochalm – 6-seater chairlift

The old Gauxjoch T-bar lift will be replaced by a 6-seater chairlift. While the T-bar lift posed a certain danger due to 2 piste crossings, the new chairlift offers more safety and comfort. As the new lift is built a few metres further and is inclined, it is also less affected by the wind. Furthermore, the new lift has powerful solar panels and intelligent control systems.

Trattenbach – 6-seater chairlift

The Trattenbach 3-seater chairlift is being replaced by a modern 6-seater chairlift. This will allow skiers and snowboarders to be transported faster and more comfortably (including seat heating and weather protection cover). Safety for children and beginners will thus be improved. This new chairlift is also energy-efficient and will be equipped with solar panels.

Zillertal Arena

The popular Zillertal Arena ski area is investing heavily in its lift infrastructure. Two large ski lifts are being replaced.

Wilde Krimml – 10-person gondola

The ski resorts of Zell am Ziller and Gerlos will be connected by a new 10-seater gondola lift, the Wilde Krimml, from the 2023/2024 winter season. This gondola will replace the Krimml X-Press. While winter sports enthusiasts with the 4-seater chairlift previously had to change at the middle station, they can now stay seated in the comfortable gondola that will take them directly from the Krimmlalm to the Übergangsjoch. The new 10-seater gondola lift takes you to your destination much faster and with the heated seats you are well prepared for cold winter days.

Mittelleger – 6-seater chairlift

Guests in the Königsleiten ski area in the Zillertal Arena can also expect more comfort in the coming ski season. The conversion from a 2-seater to a 6-seater chairlift will not only transport winter sports enthusiasts faster, but also provide better access to the beautiful slopes above Königsleiten. Here, too, seat heating and a wind bonnet ensure a comfortable ride.

Fulpmes – Schlick 2000

Galtbergbahn – the first 10-seater gondola in the Stubaital

Where the Galtalm T-bar lift once stood, a new 10-seater gondola lift, the Galtbergbahn, will take holidaymakers up the mountain in the Schlick 2000 ski area in Fulpmes in the 2023/2024 winter season. The new lift will enable skiers and snowboarders to get from the Fronebenalm to the Bärentälern via the Galtalm more quickly. During the ride, winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains through the large panoramic windows. The cable car has a climate-friendly drive, which saves up to 9% energy.

Until now, this area was only accessible to touring skiers or winter hikers. With the new lift, beginners, children and ski schools can now also reach the higher slopes.

In addition to the new Galtberg lift, further investments are being made in the Schlick 2000 ski area. For example, new snow cannons are also being installed and a connecting slope between Galtalm and Panoramasee is being built. This not only makes the ski area more attractive, but also provides relief when the gondola to Kreuzjoch cannot be used.

The Schlick 2000 ski area is constantly developing with new ideas to make the area even more attractive for winter and summer, e.g. a piste for night skiing in winter and a water park with slides for summer.

Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn

Limberg – Schattberg

Where only four people used to fit in the chairlift, the new Limberg (the name has remained the same) in Saalbach offers space for eight people. This means: shorter waiting and lift times and therefore more time on the slopes! The new chairlift also offers a clear improvement in terms of comfort with wind bonnets and is thus well protected in case of snowfall and wind.

The lift has become significantly longer, also because the bottom station has been moved down. This makes the descent longer for skiers and snowboarders and winter sports enthusiasts can thus experience even more fun on the slopes.

The entire project is climate-friendly thanks to the heat pump and several solar collectors. In addition, the new Limberg lift is not only an asset in winter, but also in summer, as it can now carry more bicycles, prams, etc.

Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis

New Komperdellbahn

In the new winter season 2023-2024, the important Komperdellbahn in Serfaus will finally be converted from a 6-seater to a 10-seater gondola lift. The gondolas are so large that they offer enough space for skis and snowboards in winter and for bicycles, prams and wheelchairs in summer. The entrance is safer and more comfortable, so that especially children and older people can get on more easily.

The new lift has an intermediate station, which is particularly advantageous in spring when the slopes are sometimes more difficult to ski on. This means that you can take the lift back up directly from the middle station to enjoy the best piste conditions. At the end of the day, you can then descend comfortably and safely from the middle station on the gondola lift. Skiers and snowboarders coming from Fiss or from the Waldbahn can now also get on directly at the middle station without having to first ski/snowboard over the slope to the valley station.

The valley station is being completely rebuilt and will have a large ski depot and a ski hire shop. The middle station will end at the Leithe Wirt mountain restaurant, while the top station will remain in the same place. However, the ski school building will be relocated so that children will have direct access to the Kindererschneealm.
