The Midi Pyrénées region is comprised of the departments of Ariège, Haute Garonne und Hautes Pyrénées. Together, they comprise 26 ski areas, of which 14 areas offer possibilities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Important winter sports destinations in the region are Le Grand Tourmalet, Cauterets, Luchon-Superbagnères, Ax-3 Domaines, Saint Lary Soulan, Piau-Engaly and Peyragudes. The largest ski resort, Le Grand Tourmalet, offers 100 kilometers of pistes on 70 slopes of varying difficulty. The highest and therefore the ski area with most snow, Piau-Engaly, is located at an altitude of up to 2.600 meters. A breathtaking panorama you can experience in the ski resort Peyragudes, which has already been a film location for a James Bond movie in the middle of the Hautes Pyrénées. For freeriders the region has some excellent runs. However, one should be aware that these descents are only suitable for experienced skiers and most routes must only be used in the company of an experienced guide. The Midi Pyrénées offers ideal conditions for winter sports, given the numerous champions it has produced, such as De Le Rue brothers, Isabelle Mir, Marie-Laure Bonnet, Mathieu Crépel and many more.
