Vrchlabí, the town on the Elbe River, is the centre in the central Giant Mountains. Vrchlabí is a vibrant and very culturally rich town with a long tradition and 13,000 inhabitants. Vrchlabí was elevated to the status of a town as early as 1533. With the unique flair of a holiday resort in the middle of the mountains, this town manages to impressively combine present and history. Vrchlabí has 3 ski resorts to offer its guests in winter. The ski resorts Skiareál Herlíkovice and Skiareál Bubákov are only 3km away from the town centre. With over 12km of slopes and 8 lifts, this interconnected ski area offers skiers and snowboarders a fun park, a timing track, 3km of floodlit slopes for night skiing and a perfect infrastructure. Winter sports enthusiasts will find a ski school with childcare, ski rental, ski service, 6 restaurants and bistros and a children's ski park with play elements, carousel and magic carpet. The somewhat smaller Skiareál Kněžický vrch Vrchlabí ski area has 4 lifts and a total of 6.7 km of perfectly groomed slopes. For cross-country skiing enthusiasts, there are 35 km of trails. These cross-country trails can also be covered with artificial snow if necessary and are partly illuminated in the evening until 20:00. The town is dominated by Mount Žalý at 1019 metres above sea level. From the lookout tower on the summit you have a wonderful view of the highest mountain in the Czech Republic - the Sněžka, and with very good visibility you can see a good third of Bohemia from here. The Renaissance chateau with its park and crypt, the Augustinian monastery, St. Lawrence's Church with its steeple, Marian column and deanery, the Giant Mountains Museum and the four historic gabled houses are also worth seeing.
